Zan Zi Bar

Deep in the darkest depths of Edgware lies an established Punjabi and North-Indian restaurant. Situated just off the hectic part of the high street, you’d be forgiven for walking past this place as from the outside it doesn’t look particularly aesthetically pleasing.

With flashing, multicoloured fairy lights and a palm tree on the sign, it just looks like another low rate Indian restaurant, but looks can be deceiving. Upon entering, the lighting is quite brash and bright and there is Indian art work splattered about the place. The Indian music and Bollywood films being played quite loudly and proudly in the background give this place a certain charm.

Zan Zi Bar is famed for its on-the-bone meats items. As with Punjabi cooking, the emphasis is on the spices and how well they blend together, not how hot a dish is. The different spices’ intensity can range from minimal to very hot and, contrary to expectations, the cuisine is not completely curry based.

As we tuck in to our starter, an off-the-bone kebab we begin to realize why people travel for miles to dine here. The kebab is lightly seasoned and the chicken is very succulent. The flavours are quite strong but not overwhelming which means you can really taste the kebab fully. Also, the highly reasonable £6.95 for the kebab means it’s an utter steal. Their monthly special of Garlic Chicken is a particular tasty treat, with lashings of garlic which is never a bad thing.

For mains, which start at £7.95, the recommendations made by the staff were always spot on, particularly with the Butter Chicken. The chicken pieces are so tender that the meat just falls apart easily in your mouth. The soft creamy sauce that slides easily down the throat, and the soft kick of spice, make this dish very more-ish. Wonderful accompaniments are the Sarson da Saag, £6.95, and the Makki di Roti, which, in combination, are fantastic. The light spices in the spinach and the soft, crunchy texture of the corn bread, go perfectly together.

Zan Zi Bar interior-wise is not extravagant, but once you sit down and taste their culinary delights, you are overwhelmed by the quality and hospitality of the place. The service and the food is exceptional and is definitely worth a visit.
