BALE DE RUA. May 21 - 31, 2009. From the moment the curtains opened, I was no longer in London - it was Brazil baby. Bale de Rua, or Street Ballet, was like no other dance company I'd ever seen before. The 14 men and 1 woman showcased a heady mix of capoeira, samba, hip hop and street dance that hypnotised you and made witnessing the journey of 3.5 million Africans to Brazil profound without being pious. There was no blame assigned, it was a celebration of the survival of the soul. This was storytelling through movement at its finest - one that evoked tears one moment and laughter the next. Judging by the 10 minute samba-induced standing ovation, the rest of the sold-out audience felt the same. I am not sure when Bale de Rue will again grace our shores, but whenever they do, get a ticket and get it early. You will not want to miss it.
"The House of Viktor & Rolf" is probably one of the best exhibitions I've ever seen! And then, there is so much more at the Barbican! Live music while you shop for example...
